Bridge of Hope Ministries in Suriname
Large areas of biological diverse, tropical forest with some areas of savanna cover
Suriname which has a small population of about 400,000 people. The official language
is Dutch, but many other languages are also spoken. Most Surinamese, about 85%, live
in the coastal area, and almost all of them in Paramaribo. The Maroons and Amerindians
live in the forests; they live scattered along its major rivers. The northern coastal
plain is farmed, mined and logged, and the area along most rivers is heavily used for
subsistence agriculture in the interior.
A couple first went to Suriname in January, 2000 for three weeks.
While there, they visited the refugee camp, known as Pokigron and visited an orphanage.
They went into the interior to an Amerindian village. To get there they drove for 2 1/2 hrs
by car and then down river by dug out canoe. The trip was an experience that touched
their hearts. She returned 11 months later to continue the work they started the first
trip. Again the following year she returned to Suriname taking with her, her brother.
Each time they go, they take much needed supplies.
The following are Suriname Projects
- We gave the following in Suriname, approx. $10,000 to help build an orphanage.
- We built a 16'x20' kitchen in the jungle for a jungle ministry.
- We gave tools to Eagle Wings Ministry.
- We gave many clothes, toys, and hygiene products...all we took in suitcases on our
trips.
- We gave an electric guitar and amplifier to a pastor.
- We had many dresses made for orphan girls. We financially helped another orphanage.
- Filled and shipped a container to Suriname, South America in August 2005. With the
help of Gems in Langley, BC.
- We collected and packaged items for the victims of Katrina and shipped the goods to
them pre-paid.
